On the edge, size 40 or 41?

Size 40: choose 36-40. The sock stretches; at size 40, 41-46 usually feels too roomy.
Size 41: narrow or slim foot? Then 36-40 often feels best. Wide foot or a high instep? Choose 41-46.
Half size (40½): choose the smaller size, 36-40.

Do they run large or small?

They fit true to size. The knit (80% organic cotton with elastane) stretches and springs back, so within one size the sock fits at 37 as well as at 39. Are you a 36? Then the toe is a little roomier. A 45 or 46 with wide feet or a high instep? Then the sock feels tighter as you pull it on.

How to measure your foot

Put your foot on a sheet of paper, heel against the wall.
Mark your longest toe and measure the distance to the wall in centimetres.
Up to 26 cm: 36-40. From 26 cm: 41-46.

Willow Bough: willow branches, looked at leaf by leaf

According to his daughter May, Willow Bough began with a walk. She was walking with her father along the little stream at Kelmscott that runs into the Thames, when he pointed out 'the detail and variety in the leaf-forms' of the willows. Soon afterwards the wallpaper was done. The result is not a decoration of a willow but a faithful rendering: narrow leaves falling over one another, carried by thin brown stems that run diagonally through the whole pattern.

Morris believed a good pattern should carry 'unmistakable suggestions of gardens and fields'. Willow Bough does exactly that, and became one of the most popular wallpapers of Morris & Co. (the V&A even calls it the most popular). It was hand block-printed by Jeffrey & Co. and has been in production since 1887.

On the sock we kept it calm: a cream foot like the ground of the wallpaper, with the green leaves and red-brown branches on top. Knitted in, not printed: the colours are part of the sock itself, so they don't fade.

It started with a simple thought: why does the most beautiful art in the world hang behind glass while we walk around at home in grey socks?

We met at Delft University of Technology. Not art historians — just two friends with the same idea. In 2020 we started out with a living room full of socks and daily trips to the post office. Today our socks are in museum shops across Europe, and every pair is still knitted by the same family workshop in Istanbul that we visit every year.

How good is the quality?

Our socks are knitted from 80% organic cotton, 100% seamless and with a reinforced heel and toe. The artwork is knitted in, not printed, so the colours don't fade. And if a hole does appear within a year, you get a new pair.

Which size should I choose?

We have two sizes: 36-40 (UK 3.5-6.5) and 41-46 (UK 7-11). In between? Take the larger size. Picked the wrong one? Exchanging is free, within 30 days.

What are the socks made of?

80% organic cotton (GOTS-certified), 15% polyamide and 5% elastane. From November we are replacing the polyamide with recycled polyamide.

How sustainable are Kunstsokken?

Organic cotton without harmful chemicals, and socks that last, so you replace them less often. Our gift packaging is packed by REAKT, a social workshop in the Netherlands.

Where are the socks made?

In Istanbul, Turkey, at a small family business. We visit the workshop every year and know the people who knit our socks. Good working conditions and fair wages are a condition for us.

What does the guarantee cover?

For a full year: if you get a hole, a loose thread or another fault, we send a new pair for free. Email our customer service a photo, that's all it takes.

Can I return or exchange?

Yes, within 30 days, free, whatever the reason. Exchanging for another size or another design is fine too. You arrange it in a few clicks on our returns page.
